Laisa Pertet
A zealous trial lawyer who fears no opposition. Since the onset of her legal career representing indigent individuals, Laisa has remained committed to a client-centered representation style. Her clients understand what is happening when it is happening.
Laisa has an extensive career representing New Yorkers accused of criminal offenses in Manhattan Criminal Court and Supreme Courts at all critical stages of a criminal case. She proudly negotiated the release of an incarcerated client and the dismissal of an indictment charging Felony Criminal Contempt in less than two weeks after her early investigation proved the complaining witness was untruthful. Laisa successfully negotiated non-criminal dispositions in cases originally charging a Felony Hate Crime Assault and even Assault on a Police Officer. Laisa creatively litigated a severance motion which was featured in the State Reporter. She successfully litigated a Habeas Writ for a client who was released after being repeatedly assaulted on Riker's Island who could not afford his bail. Laisa secured a misdemeanor disposition after arguing a Johnson/Odum/Mapp/Huntley/Dunaway Hearing for a man charged with Drinking while Intoxicated (DWI) who blew a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of 2.87 after colliding with another occupied vehicle. She successfully negotiated the early release of a vehicle impounded by the NYPD while the owner was being charged with the illegal possession of a firearm. She later got the weapon charge dismissed and sealed. She has selected Manhattan juries and even tried to verdict a case charging a violent felony offense case caught on camera.
Laisa educated her previous law office about the 2022 Less is More Executive Order and its immediate and direct implications criminal defense the week it went into effect. This law created a prompt release hearing for individuals pending a violation of probation or parole where there otherwise was no avenue for timely release.
Straight out of law school, Laisa started her legal career in Miami, Florida. She successfully tried to verdict a case charging Burglary of an Unoccupied Dwelling and Grand Theft in the face of both video and testimonial evidence. Her older client was facing a 20-year minimum mandatory prison sentence for allegedly stealing a tile cutter from a vacant structure under construction. Her client confidently rejected a five-year plea offer and entrusted that she would litigate his case to a superior degree. The verdict was not guilty on all counts including a misdemeanor trespass charge. She picked a jury in another successful trial where her client was acquitted of three counts of selling cocaine. Laisa has litigated and negotiated two dismissals in cases charging gun possession and won a dispositive motion to suppress the only physical evidence in the case – the gun.
In the Domestic Violence Trial Unit, Laisa defended individuals charged with misdemeanor offenses that qualify under Florida's Domestic Violence Statute 741.28. Successfully defended two people wrongfully charged with Battery on their former life partners in two separate jury trials.
In the Juvenile Delinquency Trial Division, Laisa defended children as young as 10 years old up to 18 years old who were charged with committing a delinquent act, which is an act that would be considered a criminal offense if done by an adult. Tried over 10 delinquency trials. She drafted and successfully argued a motion to reconsider a judge's verdict in a felony delinquency matter for a youth who was expelled from school based on the underlying arrest. She won her first delinquency trial at judgment of acquittal where the prosecution charged Resisting an Officer.
In the Felony Early Representation Unit, Laisa drafted motions and argued for bail reductions and other forms of non-monetary forms of release.
Upon returning to New York, Laisa transitioned into civil litigation at two different New York Civil Litigation Law Firms for two years. Laisa represented injured individuals in personal injury lawsuits in New York, Washington D.C. and Florida. She successfully negotiated a $100,000 settlement for a client skateboarder who was hit by the defendant driver in Tampa, Florida. She was the fourth attorney assigned to the case. Laisa also successfully litigated another $100,000 settlement against a foreign airline in federal court for her elderly client who suffered second degree burns from hot coffee while flying into New York from Italy triggering the Montreal Convention.
In her former law firm's First Party Insurance/Property Damage Division, Laisa collaborated with senior attorneys to represent clients in complex insurance coverage disputes, conduct in-depth legal research and craft strategic arguments in high-stakes cases. She defended healthcare practitioners against civil allegations of Racketeering and Fraud under 18 U.S. Code § 1964 in the United States District Court of the Eastern District of New York brought by Insurance Companies. She argued against Declaratory Judgments sought by Insurance Companies stating their company is under no obligation to pay her client healthcare providers pursuant to New York No-Fault Insurance Laws in Supreme Courts throughout New York State. She negotiated settlements with insurance companies for healthcare provider clients who provided treatment to injured parties involved in motor vehicle accidents and were assigned the insured party's rights under the party's insurance policy.
